How far are you from Kealakekua Bay?

We are the closest Bed and Breakfast to Kealakekua Bay. We are a 3 to 5 minute walk to Napoopoo Beach and 10 to 15 minutes to Manini Beach. This time will definitely vary depending on your pace. It is such a beautiful walk that it may take you a bit longer as you stop to enjoy all the beautiful flowers, trees and bushes.

What is your breakfast like?

We believe that the “Breakfast” in Bed and Breakfast is a very important component to your experience staying with us. We are “foodies” and look forward to plotting and planning all our menus and what ultimately ends up on your plate. In order to meet our goal to serve fresh, healthy and appetizing breakfasts, we work with a well-known local Chef Kalani Smith. Look at the breakfast section on our website to see what is on the current menu.

Is your breakfast Organic? top of page

At Kealakekua Bay Bed and Breakfast we strive to provide our guests with healthy culinary options and tasty, organic food. We go out of our way to provide healthy organic and gluten free breakfasts. Our goal is to use locally grown, organic fruits and vegetables, but on that very rare occasion when local produce is not available, we will use the next best alternative.

If I am vegan, vegetarian, or gluten free can you accommodate me?

Yes yes and yes…

How long have you been a “green” Bed and Breakfast?

We have been in business for over 15 years, and for well over a decade we have had amazing innkeepers as great stewards to the Aina (land) & Hale (home) of Kealakekua Bay Bed and Breakfast. We were “Green” before there was “green” thanks to the hard work and Aloha of those who came before me.

In your opinion what are the best tours, activities, and places I should not miss? top of page

The Big Island of Hawaii offers a multitude of activities to suit every guest’s varied interests and the innkeeper of Kealakekua Bay Bed and Breakfast is well versed in the various adventures in culinary, sports, beach, sightseeing, and relaxing options on the island. The B&B provides guide books, maps and histories of the island for your use.

Tours for “Foodies” like us – Original Hawaiian Chocolate Factory – Brilliant! For $10.00 you get to enjoy a chocolate tasting and partake in an amazing and comprehensive chocolate presentation. One guest said to me, “I left with a well rounded understanding of the process from chocolate bean to bar!” The Original Hawaiian Chocolate Factory is a very short drive from Kealakekua Bay Bed and Breakfast in the hills above Kailua – Kona. After the chocolate tour you have the rest of the day to play in the surf and sand. 888-447-2626.

Hawaiian Vanilla Company – Truly AMAZING!! And not to be missed! This is a great day trip to the Hamakua Coast. When visiting the Vanilla Farm, I suggest that you try their unforgettable (in my opinion) Hawaiian Vanilla Experience Luncheon. If you can not partake in the luncheon, their Upcountry Tea is also lovely. Tracy Reddekopp is a talented Chef and has a unique ability blend vanilla into anything and everything imaginable. While savoring every morsel of your lunch, Jim Reddekopp provides an informative and lively presentation on the history and production of vanilla. It is very educational, and upon return to the B&B, almost every guest says, “I didn’t realize vanilla is an orchid!” 877-771-1771.

Activities for adventurers and water lovers like us – Sea Hawaii Rafting – Captain Kris and his crew provide an exhilarating yet relaxing and personal adventure along the Kona coast with stops for snorkeling, lunch, viewing island formations, dolphin spotting and much more. Looking at all the fantastic coastal homes was fun as well. I have been on many boat trips and many of them can feel rushed and impersonal. I was pleasantly surprised to find Sea Hawaii Rafting. They are a great company. The trip did not revolve just around dolphins and whales (although we did see many of them) but really celebrated the beauty of the Big Island and amazing coast line. They share local lore, history with Aloha and wonderful hospitality, in addition to the lovely trip I found the price of each trip incredibly reasonable! 808-325-7444.

Surf Lessons – Kona Surf Company – Located in Kailua-Kona on Ali’i Drive across from Kahalu’u Beach. Professional, safety-focused and full of aloha. I found them very easy to learn from. I was particularly fond of the Paddle Boarding class/tour. It is becoming a very popular sport and a great way to enjoy the coast line, not to mention a great work out! Kahalu’u is also a very gentle place to learn both surfing and paddle boarding. The beach is beautiful and the entrance and exit access is very easy. 808-217-5329.

Places to write home about – Hawaii Forest and Trail-Mauna Kea Observatory tour. The view of a life time!! This is a great way to visit the world famous observatory not to mention that watching the sunset from the top of a volcano is definitely something to write home about!! The company’s tour guides are incredibly knowledgeable and share their expertise about the natural history of the island on the journey to the peak. After watching the great sunset on the mountain peak, a short distance down the mountain is the perfect place to bring out high powered telescopes for galaxy gazing – AMAZING! As a perfect end to the day, sit back with hot chocolate and cookies and take in all the beautiful stars – definitely an experience not to be missed! 800-464-1993 Astronomy.

Painted Church – The Painted Church is an amazing place to visit. This unique church is located only a few minutes drive from Kealakekua Bay Bed and Breakfast. It is exquisite and is a historically significant place for South Kona. For a small donation you can visit the church and take in the beautifully painted interior of the church.

Pu’uhonua o Honaunau – Only about 15 minutes (by car) from our B&B, this is one of the most sacred and historical sites in all of Hawaii's history. Known as "the place of refuge", a person who violated Hawaii's sacred laws (called "Kapu") could find refuge here and be absolved of a transgression and return to society. Home to many wooden carvings, ancient stone walls and a sacred temple, this is a place not to miss. There is also a wonderful snorkeling location just outside of the National Park. For more information call 808-328-2326.

Waipio Valley – Waipio Valley is a place of vast beauty were you can experience stunning natural beauty and relax on black sand beaches, see the incredible waterfalls that Hawaii is so well known for, and see Hawaii’s wild horses. The road to Waipio Valley is very, very steep and a four wheel drive is necessary for this trip. Most car rental companies forbid driving into the valley in their cars and it is suggested that you use a tour company. I have not tried this company but have received great reviews about them from guests. Waipio Valley Shuttle – reservations are recommended – 808-775-7121.

I want to bring back presents, coffee, and macadamia nuts from Hawaii. Were should I go to buy them and avoid box stores?

Kona hosts a variety of small and family owned businesses for your adventurous gift buying. The Ali’i Gardens Marketplace on Ali’i Drive is a good source for Hawaiian clothes and art. Visit local markets on weekends for original high-quality crafts, food, and coffee produced by locals. Take an excursion to the Original Hawaiian Chocolate Factory and Hawaiian Vanilla Company and purchase their products for gifts. National chains and box stores found on the island are also a convenient alternative for gift buying.

Kealakekua Bay Bed & Breakfast started to carry products on sight after we were asked this question by many many guests. We have the following products on sight: Ola by Hawaiian Body Products, CDs by Grass Shack Record, Coffee by Wailapa Farms (certified organic coffee), and art by a verity of local artists.
